As the owner of A Small Business Marketing company, I have the privilege of sitting down with a lot of different business owners most of whom are successful. As an entrepreneur, one of the things I try to to do is take away little nuggets that I can apply to my own businesses. So I created My Small Business Owner’s Manifesto, which I may update from time to time and will consist of the most important principles (in my opinion at least) that I’ve observed in other businesses or even my own.

This Huge Banner Adorned a Building in Downtown Cleveland in 2006
So One thing you should know about me is that I’m a die hard basketball fan. When I say die hard, I mean OCD obsessive. So as basketball fan in 2006, it was impossible to not notice the new Nike marketing campaign centered around James, in which it displayed him in the stereotypical Christ-like pose with the message “We Are All Witnesses”. The message being of course that Lebron is so good, we are lucky merely be spectators to his magnificence. This was followed by the Cleveland Cavaliers giving out these shirts at the arena which simply said “Witness” and featured a Nike Swoosh. These shirts which were just regular t-shirts were quickly popping up on eBay fetching $40 each!
So another thing you need to know about me is that I’m a die hard Dallas Mavericks fan. And this particular 2005-2006 season in which Nike was attempting to anoint Lebron James as a basketball Christ, Dirk Nowitzki, the Mavericks best player and my favorite player, was having a rather remarkable playoff run himself yet few seem to be noticing because of his team first, not self promotional ways. So with the City of Dallas rabid about the Mavs deep playoff run and with Dirk not getting his due attention, I had a business idea. [click to continue…]
